Feeding and Enrichment

Wet or Dry Food?

Nutrition plays a major role in a cat’s long-term health, and in general, we strongly encourage feeding primarily wet food whenever possible. Cats naturally have a low thirst drive and are designed to get much of their hydration from food. Diets consisting mainly of dry food may contribute to chronic dehydration and are associated with increased risk of urinary and kidney issues in some cats. Wet food also tends to be lower in carbohydrates and can help support healthier weight management.

Ingedients

When choosing food, ingredient quality matters. We recommend looking for foods with clearly identified meat ingredients and avoiding foods heavily based on fillers such as corn, wheat, soy, and meat by-products. In general, the more animal-based protein in the first ingredients, the better.

Kitten Food

Kittens should remain on kitten-specific food until at least 8–12 months of age. We also encourage offering different flavors and textures over time to help prevent cats from becoming overly fixated on a single food.

Enrichment

Enrichment is just as important as nutrition. Food puzzles and slow feeders are excellent tools for keeping cats mentally stimulated, engaged, and active while helping prevent boredom and overeating. Many cats thrive when given opportunities to “hunt” and work for part of their meals.
